Oh Hyun-Sook

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of group art therapeutic education on the cognitive abilities and emotions of preschool children. 12 children in G city participated in this program. The Group Art Therapy Education program took place over a total of 12 sessions, with each session lasting 90 minutes, and the sessions taking place once a week. The subjects were divided into 2 groups; a treatment and a group. In order to analyze the cognitive abilities of the participants, this study made use of SDT. In order to examine the emotional changes in the subjects, emotional content and self-images in their SDT results were analyzed. SDT analysis was conducted for pre, post and follow-up stages in the study. Wilcoxon's signed-ranks test was performed to analysis the effects of this program. The results of the study were as follows. First, the program brought about increases in the prediction/arrangement scores, combination/expression scores and spatial perception scores in participants, when pre test and post test scores were compared. Second, although not statistically significant, changes in the environment took place in terms of changes in the expressions used by preschool child subjects. These findings suggest that group art therapeutic education can have positive effects upon preschool children's cognitive abilities. Moreover their free use of emotional expression during this program appears to result in positive changes in their emotional state.
